The Investment Adviser

The Investment Adviser sources, analyses and recommends transactions to The Manager. It also monitors the portfolio companies and actively works with them to achieve growth.

Nick Pople

Nick Pople

Nick is a co-founder and director of Ludgate and was responsible for all of Ludgate's investments in Cleantech companies prior to LEF. Since LEF's launch in August 2007, Nick has coordinated all investment activities of the Fund along with Nigel Meir (see below). Nick has gained extensive international business experience over the last 16 years including banking, corporate finance and venture capital. He has advised, and raised equity and debt finance for, a wide range of small companies both quoted and unquoted. Prior to co-establishing Ludgate, Nick worked within the commercial and investment banking divisions of Barclays Capital (formerly BZW), focused on project and corporate finance where specific sector knowledge was gained in power and energy (including alternative energy), infrastructure and transportation (including air transport and shipping). Nick is responsible for all Ludgate's investment activities in the Cleantech Sector. With respect to Ludgate's portfolio companies, Nick a director of Rapid Action Packaging Ltd, has observer status on the board of agri.capital GMBH and New Earth Group and is on the supervisory board of STX Services B.V. Additionally, Nick is a director of Jacoma Ltd, Hiflux Ltd, Scheidegg Ltd and Ludgate Investments (Jersey) Ltd.

Dr Nigel Meir

Dr Nigel Meir

Nigel joined Ludgate in May 2005 as a Director, with responsibility for developing the fund management business. He qualified in medicine from Oxford in 1981 but left his medical career in 1988 to become a diplomat. He subsequently worked for MEC International as a director and strategy consultant to a client base of City firms. From 1998 to 2003 he was the CEO of Alpha Investment Management UK, the London subsidiary of a substantial hedge fund group. From Alpha he moved to be Head of the UK Institutional Business for Pioneer Investments, the €225 billion asset management arm of the Unicredito Banking Group. Since LEF's launch in August 2007, Nigel has coordinated all investment activities of the Fund along with Nick Pople. Nigel is responsible for LEF's investments into STX Services B.V. and Hydrodec Group Plc and is a member of the credit committee of STX. He is also a director of NanoVibronix Inc.

William B Weil

William B Weil

Bill joined Ludgate in July 2008 as a portfolio manager, with responsibility for identifying, executing and managing investments for Ludgate in the Cleantech sector. Bill graduated with honours from the University of Pennsylvania's intensive Management & Technology programme, with degrees from both Wharton and the School of Engineering. He then joined Environmental Resources Management as a consultant, gaining exposure to the environmental impacts across a wide variety of sectors. Following various operational experiences, including helping to turn around a start up in the metals sector, Bill completed an MBA at INSEAD. Prior to joining Ludgate, Bill was responsible for analysing companies, new technologies and markets as the General Manager of Strategy and Portfolio for Royal Dutch Shell in their Renewables and CO2 division and then latterly, has gained experience in cleantech venture investing when working with Vantage Point Venture Partners. With respect to Ludgate's portfolio companies, Bill has observer status on agri.capital Gmbh, New Earth Group and Terra Nova.

Nick Curtis

Nick Curtis

Nick Curtis joined Ludgate Investments Ltd in September 2009. After graduating from Bristol University with a degree in Geography, he qualified as a Chartered Accountant at Price Waterhouse in 1987. He then worked in M&A at Kleinwort Benson & PaineWebber before joining Enron as Director, Corporate Development. He moved to BG, and its successor companies Lattice and National Grid, where Nick's roles included Head of Corporate Finance at Lattice Plc and Project Director responsible for the development of the Isle of Grain LNG importation project.

Latterly he was Head of European Risk at GE Energy Financial Services, investing money on behalf of GE in the renewable energy market in Europe with transactions that included Fotowatio, the Spanish solar developer and owner, Gama Enerji, a Turkish energy joint venture and Theolia, the French wind developer.

Edward Daniels

Edward Daniels

Edward joined Ludgate in January 2007 as a corporate finance executive. He has responsibility for the execution of advisory services to client companies and the performance of financial due diligence of potential investment opportunities. Edward is currently portfolio manager for Ludgate's principal investments. Edward graduated from Newcastle upon Tyne University in 1996 with joint honours in Accounting and Economics. Following qualification as a Chartered Accountant, he joined Ernst & Young LLP, spending two years working with small entrepreneurial companies in London, and four years providing buy side due diligence and related transaction services for private equity clients in London and New York. He has worked on a wide range of transactions in the retail, distribution, manufacturing, telecommunications equipment and healthcare sectors and has experience in consolidations/roll-ups for private equity portfolio companies and high yield bond offerings.
